Kai Nanfelt

Music to Weather the Storm

About

Kai Nanfelt writes songs for the moments we struggle to put into words. A Rhode Island singer-songwriter, he blends introspective storytelling with warm acoustic production, creating music somewhere between John Mayer, Brandi Carlile and Ed Sheeran. His emotionally honest songwriting explores themes of mental health, resilience and hope, offering listeners a sense of connection through life's most challenging moments. While building a career behind the scenes as a music publicist supporting acclaimed artists, festivals (such as Newport Folk Festival and Boston Calling), and music organizations, Kai quietly amassed more than 3 million streams across his own catalog. He serves on the board of Tune In Tune Up, a Rhode Island nonprofit supporting music industry professionals, and is donating 100% of the streaming proceeds from his new single, "Down," during its first 100 days to the organization.

More about Kai Nanfelt

Kai Nanfelt writes songs for the moments we struggle to put into words.

Although music has always been central to his life, Kai spent much of the past decade helping tell other artists' stories before fully committing to his own. Through artist publicity, festival communications, and media relations, he supported acclaimed musicians and events including Boston Calling, Newport Folk Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, and Outside Lands, while quietly building a catalog that has accumulated more than 3 million streams.

For years, however, Kai lived with one foot in and one foot out of his own artistic ambitions. Anxiety, OCD, depression, and self-doubt often made pursuing his own music feel secondary to helping others pursue theirs. Over time, he came to realize that if his goal was truly to help people through music, he first had to be willing to share his own story.

That shift transformed his songwriting. Rather than simply documenting difficult moments, Kai began writing songs that create connection, offering listeners a place to feel understood through themes of anxiety, friendship, addiction, grief, recovery, and hope. His breakthrough single, "Sober," written after learning of his best friend's mental health crisis, became the foundation of that mission and continues to shape everything he writes today.

Whether writing about life's highest highs or its deepest lows, Kai's songs are rooted in the belief that vulnerability creates connection. Rather than offering easy answers, his music makes space for difficult emotions, reminding listeners that healing is rarely linear and that no one has to navigate life's hardest seasons alone. It's a perspective that has resonated with millions of listeners and continues to guide his work today.

In 2026, Kai returned to releasing music with a renewed sense of purpose. His latest single, "Down," explores the non-linear nature of healing and the quiet realization that progress isn't measured by never falling, but by continuing to get back up. To support that message beyond the music itself, he is donating 100% of the song's streaming proceeds during its first 100 days of release (through October 25, 2026) to Tune In Tune Up, a Rhode Island nonprofit where he serves on the board, providing mental health, medical, dental, and financial assistance to music industry professionals.

For Kai, songwriting has never been about having all the answers. It's about helping people feel understood while they search for their own.
